Moyzes Quartet 50

Half a century of existence is not only a testament to an ensemble’s artistic vitality, but also an opportunity to look back at its rich history and reflect on the impact it has had on musical life, which it helped shape for decades. In Slovakia, there are few ensembles with such a long-standing tradition – making the celebration of the Moyzes Quartet’s significant anniversary all the more special. The quartet was founded in 1975 during the studies of its founding members at the Conservatory in Bratislava and adopted the name of the prominent Slovak composer Alexander Moyzes in 1981. Over the course of its rich artistic journey, the quartet has earned laureate titles at both national and international competitions, as well as numerous awards, including the Tatra Bank Foundation Art Award. The quartet has collaborated with major world and Slovak artists and ensembles and has successfully represented Slovak musical culture across nearly all of Europe, as well as in Japan, India, Morocco, the USA, and Cuba. It has also achieved significant recognition in the field of recording – boasting dozens of CD albums and numerous recordings for Slovak Radio and foreign broadcasting companies. At the Viva Musica! festival, the Moyzes Quartet will present a program featuring works by three composers — Joseph Haydn, the innovator who is often regarded as the father of the string quartet form; Ladislav Kupkovič, with whom the Moyzes Quartet shared a long-standing collaboration and friendship; and Alexander Moyzes, after whom the ensemble is named. The concert will take place in the beautiful garden of the Albrecht House on Kapitulská Street.

We are pleased to celebrate our anniversary also at the exceptional Viva Musica! festival. To open the concert, we will perform the well-known ‘Bird’ Quartet by Joseph Haydn, which will soon be released on our new album. Ladislav Kupkovič studied violin in Bratislava, just like most of us, in the class of the prominent Slovak pedagogue Albín Vrteľ, at whose initiative our quartet was founded fifty years ago. Ladislav was our friend, and we are happy to remember him with the piece Initials. The music of Alexander Moyzes is undoubtedly one of the fundamental pillars of our ensemble's repertoire. His magnificent composition of twelve pieces on folk tunes, The Four Musicians, will surely enhance a beautiful summer evening. We are very much looking forward to seeing you!" said the members of the Moyzes Quartet.
