Konvergencie International Chamber Music Festival – FESTIVAL PASS
13. 9. 2022 – 25. 9. 2022, Bratislava – Piešťany
“Like the borders of some enormous empires of the past, so also the borders of classical music are in some sense hypothetical, and at the same time absolutely definite. No one really knows where they lead, yet it is clear that somewhere they do exist.”
Alessandro Baricco (The Soul of Hegel and the Cows of Wisconsin)
Playful and profound, but above all boundlessly diverse, such will be the music at Konvergencie 2022, the current annual event of the international festival of chamber music. A chamber orchestra concert with works by Valentin Silvestrov, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms (Convergence Players, I. Karško) will open the festival.
The twenty-third annual Konvergencie also offers an exclusive Slovak premiere of Stockhausen’s Harlequin for clarinetist, mime, and dancer, as rendered by Martin Adámek, soloist of the prestigious French Ensemble intercontemporain.
An evening entitled Building Bridges presents interesting contexts of Norwegian and Slovak music, including works by the romantics Ján Levoslav Bella and Edvard Hagerup Grieg (M. Paľa, K. Paľová), elite Scandinavian jazzmen (S. Raknes, T. Brunborg), and a unique cross-genre project of Slovak musicians with the double bassist Steinar Raknes. The Italian pianist Claudio Trovajoli will be another guest of the festival. He will perform in works by French composers (Debussy, Ravel, Franck) and in the virtuoso Flute Trio by Nino Rota. Chamber arrangements of works by Hans Zimmer, from the soundtrack of Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film Interstellar, and a modern audiovisual concert arrangement of electronic music from the album Stroon – Temple Timbre Embers in the form of site-specific performance, will be presented in the Church of Our Lady of the Snows at Calvary. An indispensable part of the festival is the traditional Bratislava night of chamber music, with works by Ilja Zeljenka and Peter Zagar and a children’s concert with the Tibor Feledi Kairos Quintet and the Slovak Radio Boys and Girls’ Choir (dir. A. Kokoš). The festival regularly offers space to young artists, and this year also presents works by laureates of the Composers’ Competition, Adam Hudec, Michal Blažek, Marek Fóra and Šimon Lučenič. Konvergencie 2022 will not only be about music. Audiences may also look forward to a monodrama by Patrick Süskind, with the outstanding Martin Huba, and readings from texts by Ilja Zeljenka and Alessandro Baricco, with Robert Roth and Mário Gešvantner. The festival’s concluding concert will be symbolically devoted to events in Ukraine. The pianist Natacha Kudritskaya and the violinist Andrej Bielow, musicians from that war-torn land, have accepted our invitation. Another honoured guest will be Alexey Lubimov, legendary Russian pianist, who will play a concert of the works by Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov. Lubimov is one of the Russian personalities, who openly and courageously protest against the war in Ukraine even in his own country.
