Popredný flámsky flautista Barthold Kuijken (1949) študoval hru na priečnej flaute na konzervatóriu v Bruggách a na Kráľovskom konzervatóriu v Bruseli. Už počas štúdia sa začal zaujímať o historické hudobné nástroje (zobcová flauta, traverso), ktoré ho inšpirovali k inému spôsobu interpretácie barokovej hudby, než bolo zaužívané. Toto smerovanie sa stalo rozhodujúcim pre jeho ďalší hudobný vývoj. So svojimi bratmi Sigiswaldom (husle) a Wielandom (violončelo) založil súbor The Kuijken Ensemble, kde získané interpretačné poznatky spoločne uplatňovali v praxi. Barthold Kuijken bol tiež dlhoročným členom barokového orchestra Collegium Aureum a súboru La Petite Bande. Ako pedagóg hry na traverse pôsobil na Kráľovskom konzervatóriu v Haagu. Na konte má desiatky CD s nahrávkami považovanými za referenčné. Za celoživotné bádanie v oblasti historicky poučenej interpretácie barokovej hudby získal v roku 2007 ako prvý v Belgicku titul „doctorate in music“ od Free University v Bruseli.
