Alfred Desenclos sa začal zaoberať hudbou pomerne neskoro. Počas dospievania musel pracovať, aby uživil rodinu, ale už v dvadsiatich rokoch študoval klavír na konzervatóriu v Roubaix a v roku 1942 získal Rímsku cenu (Prix de Rome). Skomponoval množstvo diel, ktoré ako prevažne melodické, harmonické a tonálne ukotvené boli v experimentálnejšom povojnovom období často prehliadané. Jeho záverečné kvarteto koncertu potvrdzuje suverénnu orientáciu v špecifických idiómoch saxofónového média, zmysel pre gradáciu a citlivé narábanie s motívmi oscilujúcimi na rozhraní jazzovej a klasickej štýlovej roviny.
