Fauré sa v priebehu dvadsiatich piatich rokov od založenia Société Nationale de Musique Français (1871) nenápadne vyvíjal vlastnou cestou a doviedol ju k bodu, keď sa francúzska hudobná renesancia v zmysle znovuzrodenia stala skutočnosťou. Národné povedomie bolo u Debussyho, d'Indyho, Ravela a Faurého prítomné vo veľmi odlišnom pomere a v odlišných obdobiach ich vývoja. Napriek tomu v roku 1895 hudba vo Francúzsku prekvitala; tak bohatý a pestrý domáci kultúrny rast tu nebol od dôb francúzskeho baroka. V tom istom roku začal svoje parížske štúdiá u Faurého George Enescu. Pablo Casals ho označil za najväčší hudobný zjav od dôb Mozarta. Enescove Klavírne kvarteto č. 2 je venované práve jeho učiteľovi Gabrielovi Faurému.
